SWAP SHOP #3 - KIMCHI

How to buy one with more health benefits

Hello subscribers

I get asked a lot which fermented cabbage kimchi condiment to buy. So in today’s Swap Shop video series I explain.

The main thing to look out for are the words “live” and “unpasteurised” on the packaging so you know you are getting some of the lactic acid bacteria which is good for us.

Another sign is if it is sold in a fridge. But still check for the “live” sign - as some shops put the dead food pickles in the fridge to fool us. I’ve seen it many a time here in London!

Finally - I meant to mention in the video that the one I bought in M&S Foods was £3.50.

Confusing that it cost less than the dead food one I found in Tesco because real live foods are more valuable and cost more to make and store.

Just shows that if you expect a higher price to be the one with more health benefits that isn’t necessarily the case.

Here is a link to my easy corner-cutting kimchi recipe I mentioned, Making your own is miles cheaper than buying it if you are going to have it regularly. Also you can tweak the recipe to your liking eg make it less/more spicy or gingery or whatever.

For those of you who are new here - a very big, warm welcome and thank you for joining.

Please share any tips you have for buying authentic live kimchis where you are and let’s get a conversation going together!
