Booch basics
Save money making the finest ✨kombucha for your gut, how to pick a bought one when needed, plus an invitation to our next Zoom meet-up
Are you spending increasing amounts of money on kombucha, the fermented “probiotic” sparkling tea drink?
If so, this coming bank holiday weekend (if in the UK) might be the time to go DIY?
It's easy, and the results are delicious and perfect for summertime ☀️ drinking with a cube of ice 🧊 clinking in a glass.
Plus making your own could potentially save you hundreds of pounds/dollars/euros a year.
Also, you may get a better quality one by fermenting the ingredients yourself.
Because when you do a week-plus-long ferment the ingredients have more time to interact together and produce multiple health goodies.
The solution in your jar becomes a mini-factory manufacturing a diversity of beneficial probiotics, prebiotics, vitamins and minerals which could help your gut, liver, brain, heart, and skin health.
With supermarket ones it’s difficult to know how long they have been fermented for to achieve effective levels of probiotics (and other goodies) or if they have used short cuts.
Talking of which, I noticed a supermarket one the other day with ‘carbonated water’ on the ingredients label which doesn’t sit well with me. An authentic one develops all its own bubbles naturally when left to ferment for 7-10 days.
You’ll also save on expensive probiotic pills and liquids too and develop an interesting array of flavours depending on the weather, air, microbes on your particular SCOBY, and type of tea used, each time.
In this post I explain…
how to make it
what ingredients you’ll need
which teas to use and why green tea is my personal favourite (because it includes an amino acid called L-theanine to calm the brain)
what equipment to use
where to find a SCOBY (Synbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast - the starter biofilm that looks like a jelly fish see pic below) and how to buy bought booch if you need to
